The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called for partnership with the National Union Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to reduce carnages on the nation’s roads.

The Osun State Sector Commander, Mr Anthony Oko, made the call in Osogbo on Wednesday to mark the West African Road Safety Organisation Day (WARSO) organised for road transport workers at Akoda-Gbongan near Osogbo.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)reports that WARSO was established to give support to national road safety organisations among ECOWAS member-states.

The organisation also seeks to promote joint road safety activities, development of local expertise and encourage the creation of road safety-led agencies.

Oko said that the six unit commands in the state had been active with the collective efforts of the union in reducing accidents on the roads.

‘‘The NURTW has been supporting our command but we still want them to do more in order to avoid accidents on our highways.

‘‘Accidents have significantly reduced due to the relentless efforts of the command’s public education in motor parks, churches, mosques and market places,” he added.

Oko advised to always be patient while driving to avoid unpleasant circumstances.

The sector commander said that many accidents occur in due to reckless driving among drivers.

‘‘Accidents today are caused by recklessness by most drivers due to speeding, wrongful overtaking, and disobedience to road traffic regulations.”

He said that the National Road Safety Strategies was formulated to reduce accidents to its minimum level and advised all relevant stakeholders to be involved in its implementation.

The NURTW Chairman, Mr Suleiman Quadri, praised the command for organising the campaign, noting that it would serve as eye opener to motorists.

Quadri called on motorists to always obey road traffic regulations in order to avert accidents on the roads.

He, therefore, enjoined stakeholders in the transport sector to support the FRSC in reducing accidents to the barest minimum.
