World Glaucoma Day: Lagos State to Organise Public Lecture to Create Necessary Awareness

 

As part of activities to commemorate 2019 World Glaucoma Day, the Lagos State Ministry of Health in partnership with some Eye Care Partners will organise a public lecture to create necessary awareness and educate citizens about Glaucoma and other preventable blinding conditions.

The public lecture with the theme:“Beat invisible Glaucoma” will hold on Wednesday 13th March, 2019 at the Adeyemi-Bero Auditorium, Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja at 10.00 am prompt.

According to the Director, Medical Administration, Training and Programs, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Funmilayo Shokunbi, the guest speaker expected at the public lecture is Prof. Adeola Onakoya, a Glaucoma Specialist and Chair of the Glaucoma Society of Nigeria.

“World Glaucoma Week is an annual event celebrated worldwide to create awareness and educate people about glaucoma, its prevention and management and this year’s World Glaucoma Week is on Monday 11th to Friday 16th March, 2019”, she said.

While expressing optimism that the public lecture would be educative and impactful, Shokunbi added that the topics to be treated will include; “All you need to know about Glaucoma” and “Roles of stakeholders in the management of Glaucoma”.

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve which is vital for good vision and is often caused by abnormally high pressure in the eye. It is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 60, can occur at any age but is more common in older adults
