NAF Commissions Multi-Purpose Fitness Centre

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commissioned a multi-purpose fitness centre at its base in Yenagoa, as part of efforts to promote the physical fitness of its personnel. The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who was represented by the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Mobility Command, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Steven Onuh, performed the commissioning. The representative of the CAS noted that the military is an institution, which undertakes a lot of physical activities and as such must be physically and mentally alert.
AVM Onuh expressed hope that the fitness centre would go a long way in boosting the morale of NAF personnel to achieve the desired level of preparedness to cope with the operational commitment of the NAF in the ever changing security environment. The AOC further stated that physical fitness is not only a prerequisite for operational preparedness but also a key determinant of the overall wellbeing of individuals. According to him, the NAF has embarked on massive promotion of physical and sporting activities by upgrading facilities and constructing well-equipped fitness centres across its bases in the country. He then reminded personnel of the responsibilities the security challenges in the country have imposed on the Armed Forces and therefore advised personnel to avail themselves of the advantage of the fitness centre.
In his remarks at the occasion, the Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO) of Mobility Command, AVM Awoyoola expressed appreciation to the CAS for providing the befitting fitness centre. According to him, upon assuming office, the AOC Mobility Command embarked on the establishment of a mini sports ground for the personnel aside from other sporting initiatives to encourage participation of personnel in sports. He added that the newly commissioned fitness centre would thus further encourage personnel in the Command to participate in sporting activities. He also stated that the Command’s decision to name the fitness centre after the CAS was in appreciation of his dynamic leadership style and his constant efforts towards infrastructural development in NAF Base Yenagoa. The new gymnasium has ultra modern body fitness equipment and table tennis boards, in addition to other facilities.

Nigeria Police Pay Salary as When Due
The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to reports in some of the media captioned “Nigeria Police Force Personnel Protest Non-payment of Salaries”.
The Force wishes to categorically state that salaries of Police Personnel across ranks throughout the Thirty Six (36) States and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and all other Police Formations are being paid as at when due and on time.
It is not correct and misleading that Police Personnel protested anywhere in the country because of non-payment of salary as reported in some media today 9th October, 2017 or at any other time.
Few Policemen who went on inquiry to the Mechanized Salary Section (MSS) in Kaduna State Police Command over complaint of Under-payment, Omission of their names on the Salary Payroll as a result of the implementation of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) handled by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, were immediately attended to and addressed by the Officer in Charge of the Mechanized Salary Section (MSS), Kaduna State Command in the early hours of today that their problems have been taken up by the Force Headquarters with the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
And they left for their duty posts. No Policeman protested and none went on rampage as reported in the media in Kaduna State or anywhere else in the Country.
However, some challenges such as Under-payment, Omission of names on payroll, Non-payment and Over-payment of some Police Personnel experienced in the Eight (8) State Commands that have been enrolled on the platform of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) in the payment of August and September 2017 Salary have been taken up with the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation and its being promptly addressed.
Members of the Public are hereby enjoined not to panic but go about their lawful duties and other responsibilities without fear or apprehension. No Policeman protested in Kaduna State or any other State of the Country because of non payment of salary.
While the Nigeria Police Force is assuring the media of continuous supports and cooperation, they are implored to always verify facts before publishing in order not to cause panic, tension and misinformation in the minds of the Public.
The Nigeria Police Force is a disciplined organization and will not allow any situation to degenerate into disturbance of Public Peace and breakdown of Law and Order anywhere in the Country.

Human Rights: PRAWA, Others Tackle Abuse via Training
A Non-Governmental Organization, the Prisons Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), in collaboration with other stakeholders organized a workshop in Abuja to stem the tide of human rights abuse in the country.
The workshop is coming on the heels of public outcries on several violations and non-respect for human rights by security agencies and justice sector institutions while carrying out their constitutional duties.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Executive Director of PRAWA, Dr. Uju Agomoh spoke on the need to monitor and track ongoing human rights training and capacity building initiatives for security and justice sector institutions in Nigeria to bring down the rate of human rights violations.
She noted that the development has become imperative as results from the nationwide monitoring exercise would serve as a tool for assessing the effects of human rights trainings on police officers, prison staff and other justice sector institutions apart from determining whether such trainings have indeed resulted in behavioral changes.
The workshop had in attendance various stakeholders, including government officials , Human Rights Radio, Network for Police Reforms in Nigeria, Olive Justice Initiative, National Human Rights Commission and others.

N86m Land Scam: Court Fines Defence for Delaying Trial
Justice A. O. Otaluka of the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Lugbe, Abuja, on Wednesday, October 9, 2017 ordered Barrister Samson Paul, counsel to Sebastine Duru, a suspected land racketeer, to pay the sum of N5, 000 (Five Thousand Naira) as fine to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for delaying trial.
Duru was arraigned on May 18, 2017 on one-count charge of fraud to the tune of N86million.
He was alleged to have, between 2012 and 2013 “in Abuja defrauded and obtained the sum of N86million from one Alhaji Aliyu Idris Shuaibu on the pretext of re-instatement of Plot No. 4 Cadastral Zone C10 located at Wumba District and allocation of a new plot of land”.
The case, which was initially slated for June 5, 2017 for commencement of trial, has suffered several adjournments due to the continued absence of the counsel in court.
At the resumed trial today, though the defendant (Duru) was present in court, his counsel was absent, no representative and no reason given.
Counsel to EFCC, Muktar Ahmed frowned at the continued absence of the counsel and urged the court to impose sanction on him for what he described as “a calculated attempt to frustrate trial”.
According to him, the EFCC had always been bringing its witnesses to court at high costs.
Justice Otaluka, in granting the prosecution’s prayer said, “the court will no longer tolerate any action aimed at frustrating speedy trial from either of the parties.
Thereafter, the judge adjourned to October 25, 2017 for continuation of trial.
