Over 40 people were reported missing  after a boat conveying 50 persons capsized in Sokoto State on Sunday, the country’s emergency agency said.

Ten people have been rescued, Zubaidar Umar, Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, said in a statement on X.

According to Umar, the passengers were travelling to Goronyo market, a popular food produce market in the state, when the boat capsized.

The agency said it is collaborating with  emergency responders in a search and rescue operation to locate the missing persons.
