LAWMA Evacuates 418,500 Tonnes of Waste in May, Clears 173 Blackspots
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) evacuated 418,500 tonnes in May, according to its latest operational performance report.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Lagos.
The statement was issued by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Mukaila Sanusi.
Gbadegesin said the authority remained focused on improving operational efficiency and service delivery in Lagos State.
He said the figure represented an average daily evacuation of 13,200 tonnes through its operations and licensed Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators.
Gbadegesin said the authority was also addressing pressure points within the state’s waste management system.
He disclosed that 442 PSP operators remained active across Lagos, while 27 collection routes were under review.
Gbadegesin said the route review was aimed at improving service coverage and collection efficiency.
He added that LAWMA cleared 173 waste blackspots during the month.
“The cleanup covered road medians, markets, bus stops and other public spaces affected by indiscriminate waste disposal,” he said.
The LAWMA boss said the authority received 474 complaints and service requests in May.
He added that efforts were ongoing to improve response times and strengthen customer service delivery.
According to him, LAWMA currently deploys 77 compactor trucks, five skip trucks and 12 other operational equipment units.
He said the equipment supports waste evacuation and environmental sanitation activities across the state.
He added that LAWMA was deploying more equipment and sustaining enforcement against environmental infractions.
The managing director urged residents to patronise approved PSP operators and report service gaps through official channels.
He also advised residents to avoid indiscriminate waste disposal and support government sanitation efforts.
Gbadegesin noted that Lagos operates one of Africa’s largest urban waste management systems.
He said the system requires continuous investment, infrastructure upgrades, enforcement and stakeholder collaboration.
The LAWMA boss reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to cleaner communities and improved service standards.
He added that LAWMA would continue to build a more resilient and sustainable waste management system for Lagos State.
