Several theories have emerged on the cause and nature of the Saturday dawn explosion in Akure, Ondo State in which no fewer than 100 residential buildings, schools, churches and commercial ventures were destroyed.

Witnesses said it cannot be anything other than a bomb. Many people were said to sustain injuries from the blast which dug craters around the impact zone.

The explosion occurred near the Akure airport, affecting residents and businesses around Eleyowo community.

“The sound was loud and shattering. It must be a bomb. I doubt if there is any pipeline here. This is a bomb, nothing less,” says Mr. Kola Adeyeye who said his building was shaken by the blast.

Other respondents who had the blast corroborated the theory of a possible bomb blast.

The blast affected a great deal of the  Akure /Owo road while many people were said to be injured.

The Akure blast is coming weeks after a Sunday morning explosion at Abule-Ado in Lagos which claimed about 25 lives with buildings brought to ruins.
