Alleged sexual harassment: Our standing rules are sacrosanct – Senate

Senators in session

March 5, 2025

Senate has emphasised that the senate standing rules are sacrosanct and its provisions must be adhered to.

This is following a petition presented by Senator Natasha Uduaghan before the senate on allegations of sexual harassment and abuse of office against the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.

The Senate President at the commencement of plenary had dismissed the allegations and urged the public to await the decision of the courts on the matter.

The senate leader Opeyemi Bamidele and the senate chief whip Mohammed Tahir Monguno clarified that as provided in section 40, of the senate standing rules, a senator cannot submit a petition signed by him or her to the senate for investigation.
