Dr Bala Liman, the Education Secretary, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has directed all school principals in the nation’s capital to stop illegal charges that do not conform with extant rules and regulations.
Liman gave the directive at the 33rd anniversary of FCT chapter of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said that the directive became imperative due to the receipt of disturbing reports of illegal charges by schools in the territory.
‘‘Accordingly, the administration strongly advises that principals must first seek the permission of their various boards and departments before implementing any form of school charges. Principals must adhere strictly to all laid down instructions.’’ he said.
Liman further advised principals to always carry members of staff along in decision-making processes, to ensure smooth day-to-day school management.
He noted that the academic performances of students rested squarely on their shoulders, describing principals as the backbone of the FCT school system as they were expected to provide qualitative education to citizens.
While commending principals for keeping schools running, the secretary, however noted that FCT schools in the last few years had maintained 50 per cent average pass.
The secretary, therefore, urged the principals not to relent till they achieved the desired result of being the best school in the country.
The education scribe reiterated the administration’s commitment to improving on the territory’s national academic standings.
Responding, the FCT ANCOPSS President, Alhaji Abdulkarim Abdulrahman, gave assurance that schools would not impose unauthorized charges.
Abdulrahman commended the FCT minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, and the directors for their prompt attention to issues that would promote quality education in the territory.
