Black Saturday in Lagos: 12 die in Ojota truck accident as flood sacks Ikoyi, Victoria Island

About 12 persons were declared dead by rescuers in an early morning accident Ojota area  in Lagos in which a truck bearing a container was said to have lost its break and crashed into buses  and other vehicles nearby.

The incident stretched traffic in the area on a wet day when Lagos experienced heavy downpour. The rain which started in the morning caused heavy flood in Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki areas of the state.

On Awolowo Road in Ikoyi, commuters were forced to stop their journeys as furious flood sacked motorists from the road.  Smaller cars suffered breakdown in different spots on the road.

Parts of Victoria Island also suffered heavy flooding. Canoe owners made quick money helping pedestrians to cross to safety.

Mr. Ephraim Ekanem who said he was billed for a function at Eko Hotel had to abort his trip at NTA end of the road as flood threatened to drown his Toyota Corolla car. “I have never seen anything like this. I have been stuck here for over one hour and the flood is not ebbing. Something has to be done about drainage in this Lagos”, he fumed as he battled to stay minimally wet.
