Commuters sleep on Lagos-Benin-Asaba road; cry to Tinubu

Lago -Benin road

Commuters plying the Lagos-Benin-Asaba road slept on the road Sunday night as gridlock compounded their pain in what one of them who identified himself as Jonathan described as “double wahala.”

Political Economist NG reports that while traffic on the usually busy highway has peaked because of the Christmas season, the bad state of the road has worsened the traffic situation forcing the commuters to sleep on the road.

“We have been on the same spot for two hours. Front and back blocked; we have no idea what is going on but as you can see the road is bad. This is the Benin by-pass that used to ease traffic and decongest traffic inside Benin, but look at the road, is this a road?”, fumed a man who had his family in his car.

“Help us tell President Tinubu to give priority to this major road. We are not living,” another commuter told Political Economist NG reporter who was also trapped in the gridlock.

Investigation also showed that the traffic trauma was not limited to the Lagos-Benin-Asaba highway. The same gridlock was reported in Abuja-Lokoja-Behin road and Benin-Warri road.

The commuters who spoke to Political Economist reporter however said they were not robbed, but added that more security men should be deployed to the gridlock areas.

The ongoing construction on the Benin axis of the expressway which narrowed the lanes coupled with the indiscipline of some drivers contributed to the traffic lockdown.

The same gridlock was experienced on the Benin–Warri Road expressway due to bad road, making commuters to keep vigil on what used to be an easy access from Benin to Warri and Port Harcourt.

Food vendors and other hawkers took advantage of the situation to make quick sales.
