A federal court in Abuja has declared the Islamist Lakurawa group a terrorist organisation in Nigeria.

With the declaration, this allows the military to use maximum force against a group that has been an emerging threat to security in the northwest.

In a statement on the office of the minister of Justice and attorney general of the federation, Lateef Fagbemi on Friday, Judge James Omotosho issued the order on Thursday, proscribing the sect and banning any individual or group from participating in its activities.

The emergence of the Lakurawa group has exacerbated insecurity in the north.
