The Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA) has appealed to the Federal Government to make Onitsha Inland Water Port functional to boost economic activities in the country.

The President of ECCIMA, Chief Emeka Udeze, made the appeal while speaking with newsmen at the ongoing 29th Enugu International Trade Fair on Monday.

Udeze urged the Federal Ministry of Transport and the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) to do everything possible to reactivate it.

According to him, no matter what the challenges are, we seriously and respectfully urge that appropriate action should be taken to bring the vision that led to the establishment of the port to fruition.

“We have no doubt in our minds of the high viability of this port when made functional.

“We do hope that something has to be done as regards the functionality of this inland port as it will go a long way to boost commercial and industrial growth of the nation,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the water port was re-inaugurated by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012.
