ECOWAS leaders to come hard on Jammeh, fear of uprising heightens

Admin January 7, 2017

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that ECOWAS leaders will take a “major decision” on the political impasse in The Gambia, at a meeting in Ghana on Saturday.

This was revealed by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, on Friday.

“A major decision on the impasse is expected to be taken at that all-important meeting.

“President Buhari is the chief mediator of the crisis and he is committed to ensuring that the logjam is resolved”, he said.

President Yahya Jammeh is refusing to step down, after he initially conceded defeat to Adama Barrow in the December 1presidential elections.

Last month, the ECOWAS bloc said it would take all necessary actions to uphold the result of the polls.

But the ECOWAS decision may worsen the situation in The Gambia as the military are backing the sit-tight ruler thus fuelling speculation of a likely uprising in the event of a probable use of force to oust Jammeh.
