FG sets aside N12bn to support digital economy research in universities, research institutes

The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has announced a N12 billion fund dedicated to boosting digital economy research across Nigerian universities and research institutions.

According to the Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister, Mr. Isime Esene, in a statement on Monday, the initiative, tagged the National Digital Economy Research Clusters (NDERC), aims to bridge the gap between academic research and government policy.

To ensure a smooth application process, the Ministry says it will host a three-day “Virtual Open Day” starting Tuesday, April 7, to guide institutions on how to access the funding.

Key Highlights of the Initiative
The program is being coordinated through the Project BRIDGE Implementation Unit in partnership with the Ministry of Education. Here are the essential details:

Target Audience: University-led research consortia, including over 200 researchers and top academics.

Objective: To produce data-driven research that will directly inform government decision-making and national policy.

Virtual Open Day: A three-day orientation (starting April 7) to clarify application requirements and program structure for school heads and research directors.

The government identified six specific sectors where the research must be focused:

Connectivity: Expanding meaningful internet access nationwide.

Digital Public Infrastructure: Strengthening the systems that power digital services.

Digital Skills: Developing human capital for the modern workforce.

Jobs and Livelihoods: Creating sustainable economic opportunities through technology.

Trust and Safety: Ensuring a secure digital environment for Nigerians.

AI and Emerging Tech: Advancing Artificial Intelligence and new technological frontiers.

Mr. Isime Esene emphasized that the sessions are open to Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, and senior research officials.

“These sessions will provide detailed guidance on program expectations and consortium requirements. It is a direct opportunity for institutions to engage with the implementation unit before the final deadline,” Esene stated.

While Orientation Starts April 7 (Virtual), alll Expressions of Interest (EoI) must be submitted by 12:59 p.m. on April 13.

He however noted that Interested institutions are encouraged to register via the Ministry’s official portal to receive joining instructions for the briefing sessions.
