Giroud scorpion goal, Iwobi’s header headline Arsenal victory over Palace

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud’s 17th minute sensational goal against Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium has triggered a Twitter frenzy, even a hashtag of its own #scorpionking, the description of the back heel-flicked goal.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger  who spoke after Sunday’s 2–0 win over Crystal Palace, suggested that it could be remembered as the Giroud goal that nobody will forget.

He said  that the reflex necessary to convert  back–heel strike into a goal, transformed the movement into art. But in a post-match interview says the goal was sheer luck. His team mate, Hector Belerin, however thinks otherwise, stressing “we have seen him try such stuff at trainings”.

Giroud’s goal was followed by a brilliant header from Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi who played the play-maker role of missing Ozil. The goal was awarded to Iwobi by the goal accreditation panel after it came off the head of a Crystal Palace defender. The victory keeps Arsenal at third position but still 9 points behind tear-away Chelsea.

Twitter is however buzzing with comments on the goal, and even comparison with Manchester United Mkhitaryan’s goal. Some commentators have even dubbed Giroud’s goal, goal of the century.
