House-help, agent docked over alleged theft of items worth N20m

jewelleryA 20-year-old househelp , Faith Edeh, who was alleged to have stolen her employer’s jewellery and other items worth N20 million, was Friday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. Edeh was arraigned alongside one Peter Obah, 37, the agent that brought her to her employer.

The duo whose addresses were not given, are facing a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing preferred against them by the police.

The defendants however pleaded innocent when the charge was read to them and they were granted bail in the sum of N2 million each with two responsible sureties each in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. A. Awogboro, who admitted them to bail also ordered that the sureties should be blood relation of the defendants and must have reasonable means of livelihood.

She said the sureties should reside within Lagos and must show evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government.

During the arraignment the Prosecutor, Sergeant . Innocent Odugbu, told the court that the defendants and others who are still at large committed the alleged offences on January 18, at 11:30 a.m, adding that the incident took place at 47b Co-operation Drive, Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi in Lagos State.

He said that the defendants allegedly stole clothes, a safe containing jewellery, six pieces of watches, three different International passports with visas, all valued at N20 million.

The prosecutor said that all the items allegedly stolen belonged to one Mrs Anetoh Caroline.

According to Odugbo the offences committed are punishable under Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.

Section 285 provides seven years imprisonment and above for anyone found guilty of the offence.

The case was however adjourned till February 15 for mention. VANGUARD
