IDEVAW: LASG calls for collaboration to end all forms of violence against women

Nov. 25, 2023

The Lagos state government has called for collaborative efforts to end all forms of violence against women and gender based violence in our society.

In a statement by Hon. Cecilia Bolaji Dada, Commissioner, Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, she said, it is a deeply rooted problem that requires our collective action and unwavering commitment to eradicate it from our society.

“However, we cannot eliminate violence against women, without the active involvement of every member of our society.

“We call on individuals, communities, institutions, and governments to come together and take a stand against gender-based violence.

According to her, violence against women is a grave violation of human rights, that affects millions of women worldwide, irrespective of their age, race, religion, or social status.

“Let us remember that this day serves as a reminder of the urgent need to end all forms of violence against women. It is a day to reflect on the challenges women face and to recommit ourselves to ensuring their safety, well-being, and empowerment.

“In Lagos State, we recognize the severity of this issue and are determined to tackle it head-on.

“Our government is implementing various initiatives to protect and support women who have fallen victim to violence.

She said the state government has established safe spaces, shelters, and counseling centers to provide immediate help and assistance to survivors, and is working tirelessly to raise awareness about the importance of gender- equality and women’s rights through various slated programmes under the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

“You can ALWAYS call 767 at every instance of Sexual and Gender- Based Violence.

“Quite noteworthy to say that through education and advocacy programmes, we could change societal norms and challenge harmful attitudes that perpetuate violence against women.

It is only through our collective efforts that we can create a safer and more inclusive society for all. I urge everyone to be part of the change we want to see.

Let us challenge harmful stereotypes, support survivors, and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions. Together, we can create a society where every woman and girl can thrive, free from the fear of violence.

On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, let us reaffirm our commitment to ending this pervasive issue.

Together, we stand a better chance to give Lagos Women residents a voice of confidence against every form of Sexual and Gender- Based Violence!!
