INEC says no more campaign

INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu

The Independent National Electoral Commission has okayed resumption of political campaigns across the country ahead of the re-scheduled elections on Saturday 23rd.

This was contained in a statement by Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, issued on Monday.

The Commission noted that it took the decision after reviewing its preparations for the elections, as well as consultations with political parties

According to the statement, “It would be recalled that at the held on Saturday, 16th February the Commission gave reasons for re-scheduling the polls and released a new schedule of activities leading up to the elections.”

“In the meantime, after consultations with political parties, the Commission has approved that campaigns by parties and candidates can resume forthwith to end by midnight of Thursday, 21st February, 2019”

INEC stated further that it has also worked out in detail concrete steps to be taken to ensure that election materials arrive at the polling units in good time for prompt commencement of the polls on Saturday.

“An update will be provided by the Commission at a press conference on Tuesday, 19th”.

It would also be recalled that Femi Falana and the two major political parties, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressives Congress, APC, had called on INEC to allow political parties resume campaigns ahead of the re-scheduled  Presidential and National Assembly elections slated for Saturday, 23rd February, 2019.
