Kayan Mata: Sales of aphrodisiacs surge in Abuja, provoke suspicion

Divergent reactions have continued to trail the increased sale of local aphrodisiacs; known as ‘Kayan Mata’ in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Sales of ‘Kayan Mata’ have been trending on social media platforms and shops around the FCT, with various forms of advertisements to attract buyers.

Some vendors, who spoke with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, confirmed that the products have been experiencing massive sales in recent times.

Ms. Olatoun Ayoola, a sex therapist, and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Intimate Secrets confirmed that the aphrodisiacs were experiencing massive sales in recent times.

Explaining the origin, Ayoola said, “Kayan Mata” literally means ‘a woman’s load’ in Hausa. It originated from the northern part of Nigeria.

“They are sets of sex enhancers, sweeteners and perfumes that help to spice up the new bride’s sex life with her husband.

“Product range includes sex sweeteners, attraction kits, vagina ‘tighteners’, vagina dryness remedy, natural body enhancement, premature ejaculation cure,” Ayoola said.

According to the vendors, the price range depends on where it is gotten from and the effectiveness. Prices start at N16, 000 and can go as high as N50, 000.

Several debates have followed the use of the aphrodisiacs by women on the effectiveness and proper intention of using the products.

Some of the women who spoke said that the aphrodisiacs helped to spice up their sex life, which can become monotonous in marriage.

They added that men get bored easily and are quick to seek sexual satisfaction outside their matrimonial home or relationships when they feel they are not getting enough.

‘ Kayan Mata’, the women alleged, helps them improve their sex life so as to keep the men in the homes, away from adulterous activities.

One of the women Mrs. Priscilla Nejo said that she was introduced to the products by her friend and it has helped to resuscitate her marital sex life.

“Marriage can become very boring, especially sex life on the part of us women. This can make the men find the happiness outside.

“You know the body no longer remains the same after birth and this scares men, also my sexual urge reduced after I gave birth and ‘Kayan Mata’ has helped me get better.

“My husband can testify to this. My marriage is happier and the complaints that followed our sex life have drastically reduced,” Nejo said.

However, other respondents argued that with the alleged effectiveness of the aphrodisiacs, they suspect foul play.

They told NAN that ‘Kayan Mata’ testimonies sound like ‘spiritually orchestrated affairs’ as the results are usually more than sexual.

Respondents added that online vendors most times, advertise them as ‘seeds’ women use to make men do anything for them; hence the increased sales.

Mr. Philip Daramola, a dispatch rider said he is scared of girls who patronise Kayan Mata vendors as he always feels they have ‘unclean’ motives.

“They don’t advertise Kayan Mata like an aphrodisiac most times, they tell the women that it will make men obey them and not step outside.

“You see all sorts of soaps and creams and ‘seeds’, it is scary the length women are going to keep men. I don’t just trust it,” he added.

Interior designer Miss Ugochi Nwachiora said, “They sell it like ‘juju’ and it is just all over the place; even at the bus parks, you will be accosted.

“Scroll through social media, they push it in your face. It is almost as if women need to desperately use foul means to keep men.

“They don’t sell it like something sexual, at least the men have theirs and it is not generating this kind of buzz, they sell it like something used to tie men spiritually,” Ugochi added.

An Instagram vendor Ugiagbe Imariagbe popularly known @kayan_maza_sexcode, told NAN while sales are increasing; she receives several messages tagging the aphrodisiacs as ‘spiritual ties’ or ‘juju’.

She reiterated that they are pure sex enhancers and boosters including herbs and fruits; not pertaining to anything spiritual as widely speculated.

Tiger nuts also known as `Kunu Aya,’ is one of the major recipe.

Imariagbe said, “They are northern aphrodisiacs most women are now using to keep their men and also to improve their sex life and relationships and not to tie men down in any relationship.”

When they call it ‘juju’, I tell them the truth and make them know it is made from the rarest of herbs with no chemicals or spiritual undertones,” she added.
