The Lagos State Government is implementing strategic initiatives aimed at achieving a seamless multimodal system which will integrate road, rail and water transport means.

The state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said that the initiatives would be guided by the Lagos State Transport Policy and Strategic Transport Master Plan.

Osiyemi made this known in his keynote address at the Lagos Urban Transport Stakeholders Workshop on Monday in Lagos.

The workshop had the theme: ‘Governing Urban Mobility: Making and Implementing Decisions in Urban Transportation in Sub-Saharan Africa’.

Osiyemi was represented by the Director of Transport Policy and Coordination in the ministry, Mr. Aderounmu Agbomeji.

He described Lagos as a fast-growing megacity actively confronting mobility challenges through deliberate, data-driven and inclusive transport policies.

“Key milestones achieved include expansion of BRT corridors, ongoing Bus Reform Initiative, deployment plans for electric and compressed natural gas buses, and operational success of the Blue and Red Rail Lines,” he said.

The commissioner highlighted the transformative potential of the Omi Eko Waterways Project in reducing road traffic congestion.

He emphasised the importance of effective policy implementation through strong institutional coordination, sustainable financing, data-driven planning and inclusivity in urban transport governance.

He acknowledged the support of the Volvo Research and Educational Foundation for convening the workshop, and called for practical and Africa-focused solutions to urban mobility challenges.

The Special Adviser to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, and the Managing Director of Lagos Bus Service Ltd., Mr. Idowu Oguntona, we’re at the event, among other dignitaries.
