LASG celebrates annual indigenous traditional competitions

Admin August 11, 2025

The Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture (LSCAC), in fulfilment of its mandate to promote, preserve, and propagate the rich cultural heritage of the state, recently hosted its annual Indigenous Traditional Competition at the Olusosun Recreation Ground, Oregun, Ikeja.

The State Government disclosed this in a statement Monday.

According to the statement, in his remarks, Mr. Idowu Olulowo Johnson, Director/CEO of LSCAC, said the event is designed to bring to life cherished traditional activities such as the Ayo board game and traditional wrestling, drawing enthusiastic participation from across the Ikeja division.

According to him, this year’s edition was zoned to Ikeja, emphasising that the competition rotates across the five IBILE divisions of Lagos State to ensure inclusivity and community engagement.

In his words, “This competition promotes our way of life, fosters peaceful coexistence within communities, and educates the youth about their cultural roots. It also contributes to the local economy and strengthens our communal bonds.”

Mr. Johnson, therefore, encouraged parents to support and allow their children to participate in future editions, emphasising the role of youth in sustaining indigenous traditions.

The event was officially declared open by High Chief Tajudeen Muili, the Osin Egungun of Oregun Land, who also coordinated the presence of the masquerades. A special highlight of this year’s event was the Egungun masquerade performance, which added vibrancy and authenticity to the traditional wrestling segment.

Several individuals emerged as winners in various categories of the Ayo traditional board game and wrestling competition including

Mr. Muyideen Adebayo came tops in the Ayo game while Mr. Joshua Joseph triumphed in the traditional wrestling contest.

The winners received gifts and recognition, further encouraging participation and fostering cultural pride.

The Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture remains committed to nurturing and celebrating the diverse traditions that define the spirit of Lagos.

In attendance were the Council management team and other distinguished guests from the Oregun Kingdom who had gathered for the memorable event.
