Many feared dead as robbers attack banks in Rivers, Ondo states

Admin January 31, 2017

A suspected robbery gang on Monday stormed the Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB) branch along Shell RA Bus Stop in Port Harcourt, Rivers, injuring some persons.

An eye witness who spoke in anonymity told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that the robbery took place between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m.

The witness said it was not certain if the gang succeeded in leaving with some amount of money as a soldier was said to have pursued the fleeing robbers with his private car.

Sources said the hoodlums escaped through Rumuibekwe Street to unknown destination. Mr Nnandi Omoni, the Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) in the state told NAN that he learnt of the robbery, but had yet to receive the full details.

Omoni said he would get back to journalists after getting the details of the matter.

Robbers had attacked Owo town in Ondo State in what appears coordinated attacks on banks, residents of the town have said.

Several banks in the town were attacked in the two-hour operation, with a manager in one of the banks reportedly shot dead.

Bystanders and passers-by were feared dead, and several others injured, while one of the attacked banks was set ablaze, a security source said.

The robbers were believed to have made away with large amounts of money from the banks.
