Mohbad candlelight procession

Officers of the Lagos state police command caused a stir on Victoria Island/ Lekki tollgate axis of Lagos when they tear-gassed a candlelight procession in honour of the late Afrobeat star Mohbad.

The peaceful procession which started by 7.20pm on Thursday had attracted big names in the entertainment and was progressing in intensity when security men began to detonate tear gas causing the people to scamper to safety in different direction. It was not clear why the police which had hitherto given cover to the procession detonated canisters of tear gas.

Mega stars like David Adeleke popularly known as Davido, Falz and Zlatan Ibile had joined the candlelight procession.

The 27-year-old Mohbad  (Ilerioluwa Aloba) died in Lagos under controversial circumstances.

Since his demise, Nigerians have been calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

A similar procession is also taking place in Peckham Square, in Peckham, the UK. Participants were heard singing the late rapper’s songs in viral social media videos.

Earlier, police authorities in Lagos State  had exhumed the rapper’s body and completed autopsy on the remains.

“Autopsy has been concluded. Awaiting result…,” the Lagos Police Command spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin wrote on his X handle late Thursday.
