NCoS intercepts visitor allegedly attempting to smuggle narcotics into prison

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Oyo State Command, has intercepted a visitor allegedly attempting to smuggle narcotics to an inmate in the Agodi Custodial centre in Ibadan.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Olanrewaju Anjorin disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

Anjorin said the suspect was arrested at approximately 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday during a routine security check conducted on visitors and their belongings at the facility entrance.

He said that the suspect, who claimed to be visiting an inmate, was found to have concealed substances suspected to be Colorado and hemp inside a portion of cooked rice.

“The illicit items were discovered due to the diligence and professionalism of the gate duty officers, whose thorough search prevented the prohibited substances from entering the custodial facility.

“Further investigation revealed inconsistencies in the suspect’s stated purpose for the visit, indicating an apparent attempt to evade detection,” Anjorin said.

He said that the Officer-in-Charge of the facility, Assistant Controller of Corrections, Mr. Sunday Adekunmbi, had handed over the suspect to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and appropriate legal action.

Anjorin said the Oyo State Controller of Corrections, Mr. Osogun Olusegun, commended the officers for their vigilance and professionalism.

Olusegun reaffirmed NCoS’s commitment to ensuring the security, safety, and integrity of all custodial centres in the state.

The controller warned individuals with criminal intent to refrain from engaging in unlawful act,

He said that the custodial facilities in Oyo State were highly secure, and any attempt to smuggle prohibited items into it would be detected.
