Nigeria Super Falcons Lose 1-0 to US, Crash Out

falconsNigeria female soccer team, the Super Falcons, have crashed out of the on-going female World Cup as they lost by a lone goal to the United States. This makes it one draw against Sweden and two straight defeats to Australia and US. The team has been criticised for lack of bite and technical flair. They will now board the next flight home.

For the US team it was mission accomplished as it which won the so-called “Group of Death” following a 3-1 win over Australia and a 0-0 draw with Sweden. However, the team can’t be very satisfied with its offense so far in the tournament, as it was able to score just one goal over its past two games.

At least that one goal was scored by Abby Wambach, her first in the tournament, which had to have provided a confidence boost for the veteran striker and an emotional lift for the whole team. The USWNT can feel good about other elements of its play Tuesday, as it dominated possession, produced a variety of scoring chances and defended well against the dangerous Nigerians.

Christie Rampone came on for Tobin Heath, becoming the oldest player ever in women’s World Cup history. The defender, who turns 40 on June 24, made her 307th international appearance, her first coming in February 1997.
