NiRA Partners NITDA to Boost .ng Adoption, Records 241,000 Active Domains

The Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) announced on Monday in Abuja that it has recorded 98,285 new domain registrations, 71,470 renewals, and 1,970 restorations, bringing its total to 241,000 active domains.

The metrics were shared by NiRA’s President, Mr. Adesola Akinsanya, during a visit with board members to present the association’s 2026 vision, 2025 Annual Report, and 2026 Business Plan to Malam Kashifu Inuwa, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

Key Achievements and Security Upgrades

Beyond domain growth, Akinsanya highlighted critical infrastructure updates aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s digital space.

  • Enhanced Security: NiRA has implemented Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) to ensure a more secure and resilient internet experience for local users.

  • System Automation: The association is upgrading its internal systems, introducing automation, and reviewing its constitution to align with global standards.

  • Support Improvements: Enhancements have been made to registrar support and stakeholder engagement.

“NiRA is intensifying efforts to make .ng and .gov.ng domains the preferred standards nationwide. We hope to have joint awareness campaigns and digital capacity-building initiatives to encourage adoption by state governments, local councils, and public institutions,” Nira’s Akinsanya said.

Future Strategy: Targeting Startups and Government

NiRA is looking to expand its reach by breaking into new markets and deepening stakeholder relationships. The association plans to:

  • Target tech startups specifically.

  • Align with major tech events across Nigeria.

  • Drive widespread adoption across all tiers of government through stronger collaborations.

NITDA Pledges Full Support

Commending NiRA’s 2026 business plan, NITDA Director-General Malam Kashifu Inuwa directed the association to work closely with NITDA’s e-Governance and Digital Economy Department. This will ensure effective implementation, daily updates, and strict tracking of the blueprint’s projects.

“You have my full approval for these initiatives. Let us change our strategy, sync up more closely, and ensure everything we have agreed upon during this presentation is fully implemented by next year,” Inuwa stated.

Both organisations concluded the meeting by reaffirming their shared commitment to accelerating the nationwide adoption of the .ng domain.
