The Supreme Court on Friday in a landmark judgment ruled that the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) has jurisdiction to make its proceedings criminal.
Consequently, the Supreme Court in a unanimous decision delivered by Justice Onnoghen ruled that the CCT has jurisdiction to try Senate President Bukola Saraki who is facing trial at the CCT over allegations bothering on false declaration of assets when he was the Governor of Kwara State.
The Judges at the apex court led by Justice Onnoghen held that by virtue of Section28 of the Interpretation Act, sitting of CCT with two members is valid.
He said the intention of the CCT Law is to make its proceedings criminal and also has quasi jurisdiction to issue bench warrant.
Consequently, the seven-man panel unanimously dismissed the appeal filed by Mr. Saraki against his trial by the CCT.
By this judgment Saraki’s trial at the CCT would now proceed.
