National Population Commission (NPC) says it recorded 17,745 births in the border town of Badagry, Lagos State, from January to December 2017.

An Assistant Director in the commission, Mrs Tonia Kalu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Badagry that the babies issued birth certificates were however not the total number born in the community during the period under review.

Kalu said that the figure was less than the 20,028 recorded during the corresponding period in 2016.

She added that “in 2017, birth certificates were issued to 9,000 male babies and 8,745 females.

“Also, 104 death certificates were issued within the same period and the deceased comprised 60 males and 44 females.”

She urged residents of the area to register births of babies to enable NPC to have statistics that would assist government in proper planning.

She noted that “getting a death certificate is equally important as birth certificate as this would enable persons concerned to access the benefits of the deceased.

“People must ensure that death certificate is issued to family of the deceased.”
