Ohanaeze Condemns Attacks in South Africa, Rejects Recognition of Igbo Kings Outside Nigeria

…Distances Itself from Controversial Igbo Kingship Installation

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has condemned the attack on innocent people and the destruction of property in East London and South Africa over the installation of an Igbo traditional ruler.

In a statement issued in Enugu by the National Publicity Secretary of the organisation, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, the group viewed with dismay the recent unrest, linked to the reported installation of an “Igwe Ndigbo na East London”.

The statement made available to newsmen on Wednesday read in part: “We express deep concern over the resulting disturbances, condemn the unwarranted attacks on innocent persons and destruction of property.

“We call on relevant authorities to take necessary steps to prevent further escalation.”

The statement reiterated that Igbo people are globally known for their peaceful disposition, entrepreneurial spirit, and respect for the laws of their host communities.

It further stated that the organisation “dissociates itself from any actions that contravene the laws, customs, and traditions of host countries”.

“We wish to clarify that, to the best of our knowledge, the said installation in East London only amounts to a mere nominal observance since it is not backed by any law.

“However, the Igbo umbrella body, in alignment with the South-East Council of Traditional Rulers, does not recognise the conferment of “Eze Ndigbo” title outside the Igbo land.

“Our diaspora communities, for the sake of their internal organisation, are once more advised to adopt non-kingship designations, such as “Onyendu,” for the avoidance of misrepresentation,” Chukwu stated.

The statement urged the Igbo people in diaspora to continue to conduct themselves with discipline, dignity, and full respect for the laws and traditions of their host countries.

“Ohanaeze also called on the Government and people of South Africa to uphold the longstanding spirit of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect between Nigerians and South Africans.

“We appeal for calm, mutual respect, and constructive engagement among all parties involved,” the statement added.
