Onyeka Onwenu, Queen of Hearts, slumps, dies at 72

Delectable singer, songwriter, actress and journalist, Ms Onyeka Onwenu is dead after performing at an event in upscale Banana Island, Lagos.

Aged 72, Onwenu who still looked fit was said to have died Tuesday night after performing at the birthday ceremony of popular pharmaceutical entrepreneur Stella Okoli, owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals. She was rushed to a hospital in Victoria Island where she was confirmed dead.

Popular by her eternally relevant song, One Love, Onwenu began her music career in the 1980s and released her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981. She had several albums and singles to her belt including the hit song “One Love”, a song that still makes waves globally.

Onyeka Onwenu also had a stint in politics as chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.

She was born in 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State.
