Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the popular General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, worldwide has warned Christians to shun pride and stay humble to avoid the wrath of God.

The pastor famed for his humility said he had not always been a humble man but was made to learn the lesson of humility the hard way.

Recounting his experience at the November Holy Ghost Service (themed The Walls Must Come Down (Joshua 6:20), Friday night, at the RCCG Camp along Lagos-Ibadan expressway, Adeboye recounted his story: ‘I used to be poor and proud. When I became born again, I was the most educated person in the church and I was interpreting for the then General Overseer of the church, Pa Akindayomi.

“One day, a junior pastor came to me and said I should be the one to interpret for him. I was angry as I thought within me, how can I interpret for a junior pastor, a whole me who is the interpreter for the General Overseer. Though, I did not say no, neither did I voice out my anger, but God who knows all thoughts knew that pride was behind my anger.

‘So, after the service, as I was walking to my car (there used to be only 5 cars in the whole of that church and mine was the best and it was second hand (Tokunbo), God spoke to me. So, you are now too big to interpret for my servant? Suddenly, the heaven was shut against me. I was no longer hearing from God (by the way, one of the good things that happened to me when I gave my life to Christ was that I was hearing from God). Heaven was silent on me. I fasted and prayed and God later had mercy on me and I started hearing from Him again.”

Adeboye, also known as Daddy G.O, said from that experience, the wall of pride in him collapsed completely. As a proof that he had overcome the sin of pride, he recounted another experience.

“One day after God had dealt with the wall of pride in me, I visited our church in Ilesa, Osun State, this time as General Overseer. A deacon was already on the pulpit to take the teaching for that day when I arrived. He wanted to step down for me to take the teaching but I urged him to continue. He resisted, saying he cannot teach while I was there. Rather than take his place to teach the church, I offered to be his interpreter and that settled it.  And that was me, a General Overseer interpreting for a deacon, the same person who as a worker in those day was feeling proud to interpret for a pastor,” Pastor Adeboye told the Christian faithful.

He urged Christians to radically deal with the evil called pride in their lives because God resists the proud.” (James 4:6). He listed other self-inflicted (self-made) walls in the life of a Christian to include, Laziness, Anger, Unbelief and Doubt.
