Pastor arraigned for drug trafficking

NDLEAA 60-year-old Pastor, Raji Michael Ayoola, has been arraigned at the Federal High Court in Lagos for attempting to export banned narcotics. He was arrested by National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) operatives last February while attempting to export the substances to South Africa.

He was said to have conspired with others to unlawfully export 91 kilograms of Methamphetamine, a psychotropic substance, and 83 kilograms of Ephedrine, a controlled substance. Both drugs were said to be similar to cocaine and heroin in their effect on humans.

Prosecution counsel, Mr. Abu Ibrahim told the court that the offence is punishable under sections 14(b) and 11(b) of the NDLEA Law of 2004. But Ayoola, a father of six, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

During trial, a forensic expert, Mr. A. Anadianei said he tested the powdery substances and confirmed they were banned narcotics and that they were dangerous and unfit for human consumption because of their psychotropic effects.

Justice Jude Dagat consequently adjourned the matter till November 18 and 24 for continuation of trial.
