Peter Obi, the presidential candidate hopeful of the National Democratic Congress  (NDC), has paid glowing tribute to Nigerian nurses and midwives on the occasion of World Nurses Day, describing them as “the heart of our health sector” and praising their sacrifices in sustaining healthcare delivery across the country.

In a message commemorating the annual celebration, Obi acknowledged the critical role nurses and midwives play in national development, stressing that they remain indispensable to the nation’s healthcare system despite operating under difficult conditions.

He further noted that over the years he had supported schools and colleges of nursing and midwifery across different parts of the country because of his appreciation of the profession’s importance in healthcare delivery and human development.

He commended Nigerian nurses for their compassion, courage, and resilience, especially in the face of poor working environments, inadequate equipment, high patient-to-nurse ratios, and the physical and mental stress associated with the profession.

Obi also celebrated the achievements of Nigerian nurses on the global stage, noting that many have distinguished themselves in research, clinical practice, and healthcare innovation while projecting Nigeria positively abroad.

According to him, a future government under his leadership would prioritise investment in healthcare education and training to ensure Nigerian nurses remain globally competitive and adequately rewarded for their sacrifices.

Reaffirming his oft-repeated vision of national transformation, Obi stated that the country must evolve into a nation where the dedication and hard work of healthcare workers would no longer go unnoticed.
