A police Inspector, Mr. Nelson Abuante, has reportedly committed suicide after he mistakenly shot dead his colleague, Inspector Monday Gbaramana, as the cops made efforts to arrest a suspect in Rivers State.

Both Inspectors attached to Taabaa Division were said to have on Sunday afternoon headed to Nyogor-Lueku community in Khana Local Government to arrest one Mr. Akere Akpobari over allegations levelled against him by his mother.

Police report said the suspect, Akere, resisted arrest and fracas ensued between him and the two Inspectors.

It was during the brawl with Akere that Abuante mistakenly shot Gbaramana inflicting serious injury on him.

Efforts to rush him to the hospital yield no fruit as he died on the way. The vehicle conveying him to hospital was said to have ran out of fuel.

On discovering that his colleague had died, Abuante  shot himself to death.

The bodies of the two officers had been deposited at the mortuary awaiting autopsy.

Police Public Relations Officer in Rivers, Grace Iringe-Koko, has confirmed the incident, adding that investigation is ongoing.

Cases of police officers killing their colleagues had been reported in the past. While some were acts of commission, others were logged as acts of omission.
