The Police Command in Oyo State has arrested a 20 year-old man over an alleged unlawful possession of a suspected human part.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Ibadan.

Olayinka said community vigilance group members arrested the suspect who disguised as a scavenger on Friday at about 8:00 a.m at the Oroki area of Oyo due to his strange movements and conduct.

He said that the concerned residents subjected the suspect to a search and found a human being’s right leg inside a large sack containing waste plastic bottles in his possession.

“Upon receipt of the report, a Police joint patrol team, in collaboration with other security partners, swiftly rushed to the scene where an angry mob had gathered with intent to lynch the suspect.

“The team professionally dispersed the mob and rescued him from imminent harm, while the suspected human part was recovered as exhibit and secured for forensic and investigative purposes,” he said.

The PPRO said the suspect had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet and thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Olayinka commended the vigilance group members and the public whose alertness as well as timely action led to the detection and arrest of the suspect.

The command’s spokesman said the action of the concerned members of the public was an indication of the importance of community participation in crime prevention and control.

He, however, warned the members of the public against taking laws into their hands or engaging in mob actions, saying that such acts were unlawful and capable of obstructing justice.
