The Police Command in Akwa Ibom says it rescued two women from an irate mob, who stripped, brutally assaulted, and attempted to subject them to unlawful execution.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfom John, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

John said the incident occurred on Tuesday at about 9.45 a.m., along Ring Road 3 in Uyo metropolis.

She said the command received a distress call from a commissioner in the state, who witnessed the incident on his way to the office.

According to the police spokesperson, the commissioner took a courageous step to save the victims before alerting the command of the incident.

“Upon receipt of the distress call, operatives of the command swiftly mobilised to the scene, dispersed the violent crowd, rescued the victims from imminent danger and rushed them to a medical facility where they are currently receiving treatment.

“Following immediate intelligence-driven action and preliminary investigation, one suspect was arrested at the scene for actively inciting the mob and allegedly calling for the execution of the victims during the violent attack,” John said.

John said the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, had ordered a comprehensive manhunt for every individual connected to the act.

The police spokesperson said that all perpetrators, sponsors, and accomplices involved in the attempted jungle justice would be identified, arrested, and prosecuted without delay.

She warned that the police command would invoke the full weight of the law against persons engaging in acts capable of threatening public peace, safety, and security. (NAN)
