The Police Command in Lagos State has detained a man for allegedly stabbing another man to death at the Balogun market in the Lagos Island area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos.

Hundeyin said that the incident happened on Wednesday around 11:00a.m.

“There was an incident of a free-for-all fight between some hoodlums and miscreants in the Balogun Market today.

“During the fight, the suspect from Abia stabbed the victim from Kogi to death and the suspect in turn stabbed himself on the shoulder and became unconscious.

“He is currently under arrest in the hospital where he is being treated,” he said.

The spokesperson emphasised that there was no inter-ethnic conflict or unrest occurred.

“There was no tribal clash or disturbance between any ethnic groups and the others inside Balogun Market.

“There was no loss of innocent lives or injury to any person or damage to goods and property of marketers inside the market.

“The command wish to reiterate that the incident is not a tribal clash but purely between miscreants and hoodlums at the market.

“Normalcy has been restored. Marketers and the general public on the Island and other parts of state are encouraged to go about their businesses and other lawful endeavours without fear or apprehension, ” he said.

According to him, investigation into the matter will be concluded and the suspect will be prosecuted after he has been discharged from the hospital.

The image maker said that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh appealed to residents to remain law-abiding and calm, saying Lagos is peaceful.

“CP Jimoh urges residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate with the command to sustain existing peace in the state and not to spread fear in the mind of the public as Lagos is generally peaceful,” Hundeyin said.
