Six killed in Abuja transformer explosion, NERC to probe cause, AEDC to pick medical bills of the injured

Admin July 10, 2016

transformer explosionThe tragedy that struck in Abuja in which a transformer exploded has claimed six lives, injuring several others in Tudun-Wada area of the Federal Capital Territory.

The explosion was said to have been caused by sparks from faulty cables belonging to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC. Residents of the area said the transformer has always had technical problems which they had severally reported to the electricity officials.

The authorities of the AEDC, according to the residents of the community, have made a verbal promise to pick the medical bills of those recovering in hospitals.

Chairman, NERC, Dr. Anthony Aka, who visited the area on Saturday mourned the deceased and prayed for speedy recovery of those injured. He decried the poor power infrastructure and unprofessional  connections by the agents of AEDC. He ordered the company to ensure that substandard electrical materials were removed and replaced with approved ones.

“We will investigate the cause of the explosion and if we find that the distribution company has been negligence we will apply the necessary regulatory sanctions”, Akah told the aggrieved residents.
