Soccer round up: Plateau United, Rivers United win big; Madrid beat Sevilla in Spain, Barcelona shocked

Plateau United football club

Plateau United FC of Jos on Sunday at the Rwang Pam Stadium defeated visiting Kano Pillars 2-0 to maintain the top spot of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), with 25 points. It was the leaders first victory over Pillars since the 2003-2004 season.

United took the lead in the 14th minute when Ibe Johnson scored with a shot outside the penalty box.

The home side stepped up their game and made series of attempts but the visitor’s goalkeeper was at his best to stop the attempts on goal as the first half ended 1-0.

On resumption, Plateau United doubled its lead in the 55th minute when Golbe Elisha headed in the second goal of the day.

Plateau United Chief Coach, Kennedy Boboye, dedicated the victory to his players for giving their all to secure the three points against a good Kano Pillars side.

Also on Sunday, Rivers United routed visiting Al-Merrikh of Sudan 3-0 to brighten their chances of qualifying for the group stages of the CAF Champions League (CAFCL).

The match played in Port Harcourt and watched by Governor Nyesom Wike, was the round of 32 first leg clash of the competition.

A first half brace from Guy Kuemian and another brilliant effort from Esosa Igbinosa gave the Pride of Rivers a comfortable lead going into the second leg next weekend.

In Spain, Deportivo La Coruna shocked Barcelona 2-1 while Real Madrid overawed plucky Real Betis 2-1 with the winning goal coming from Sergio Ramos in the closing minutes of the game. Real Madrid still leads the log.
