Study UK Alumni Awards: Nigerian lawyer emerges finalists for outstanding performance in raising awareness on copyright

A Nigerian legal practitioner, Mr. Rockson Igelige has emerged a finalist in the global Study UK Alumni Awards for 2021-2022.

In a letter by the British Council made available to newsmen on Thursday in Abuja, Igelige was selected as a finalist for the Social-Action Award category.

Study UK Alumni Awards were created by the British Council to recognise UK University alumni who are using their education to make a difference.

Specifically, the British Council in partnership with UK higher education institutions created the awards to recognise outstanding success in entrepreneurship, professional achievement and social impact by people who had studied at UK higher institutions.

Igelige who holds a First Degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Benin and Law from Delta State University proceeded to University of Westminster, UK, for a Master Degree in Law.

According to the Awards organisers, Igelige emerged finalists for his outstanding performance in raising awareness on copyright, patent and trademark across Nigeria.

The legal practitioner was recognised for his outstanding performance in the fight against piracy in intellectual property through a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) he co-founded, Friends of the Creators Artistic Foundation, after his UK study.

In his presentation, the lawyer said his NGO was recently accorded permanent observer status by the World Intellectual Report Organisation, an agency of the United Nations.

Igelige also said that from a suit prosecuted by his law firm, MTN, the largest communication network in Nigeria was ordered and made to pay N50 million compensation to a music artiste for copyright infringement,

Specifically, the artiste was paid the compensation by MTN for using part his music as ring back tone without first obtaining authorisation from the artiste. (NAN)
