A Squash Court

Prof Olawole Obiyemi, Director of Sport, University of Ilorin has disclosed that the institution’s Squash Complex will be ready in four weeks.

Prof. Obiyemi made the disclosure on Friday during an interactive session with journalists in Ilorin.

He said the contractor has assured him that the complex with four courts, two Board Rooms and four offices will be ready in four weeks.

The Director said that the courts, which were of international standard, will be used during the forthcoming 13th edition of the Nigerian Universities Staff Sport Association (NUSSA) Games to be hosted by the university between September 21 and September 30 this year.

Obiyemi listed events that the University of Ilorin will be competing for at the NUSSA Games to include Athletics, Draught, Squash, Darts, Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Table-tennis, Chess, Football, among others.

Before the NUSSA Games, the Director said that the University will play host to the 2018 Nigerian Medical Students’ Association Games (NIMSA) Games in August.

He also said the second edition of the JAMB Tertiary Institution Football Championship will also be hosted by the University before the commencement of the National Youth Games.

The Director of Sport further stated that the National Youth Games will come up between September 7 and September 17 following the five years Memorandum of Understanding signed last year between the University and the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sport.

According to him, the School female 3×3 Basketball team has been selected as one of the two female teams to represent Nigeria at the 9th African University Games holding at Mekelle University, Ethiopia, from July 1 to July 7.

“Sport is an everyday affair, a sound mind in a sound body, therefore there is need for improved funding for sport from sport enthusiasts and philanthropists.”

The Director said the football stadium and the indoor Hall at the Sport Complex have floodlights to ensure matches at night.

He urged staff and students to take advantage of the opportunity to develop interest in sport so as to improve their general well-being.
