We will impeach Governor Fubara if…, says Assembly member

Hon Granville Tekenari Wellington, a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly has hinted that Governor Siminalayi Fubara will be impeached by the Assembly if he fails to obey the Supreme Court, Political Economist NG.

He said in a trending video that the Governor must come before the Assembly to present the budget including actioning other orders of the apex court, otherwise impeachment process against the governor shall commence.

Wellington is among the 27 Assembly members loyal to FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, who got victory at the Supreme Court on Friday.

Political Economist NG recalls that in a one hour, thirty-six-minute judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, the five-man panel of the apex court had unanimously dismissed the cross-appeal filed by Governor Fubara challenging the validity of the House of Assembly presided over by Hon. Martin Amaewhule as the Speaker.

While dismissing Fubara’s appeal, the Supreme Court ordered Amaewhule to resume sitting immediately with other elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Though Fubara had in a state-wide broadcast said he would abide by the ruling, Wellington said if that was not done, the Assembly will have no other choice but to impeach the governor, adding “impeachment is not a death sentence.”

He listed the ‘sins’ of Fubara to include disobedience to court orders (High Court and Court of Appeal), flouting the Constitution, spending 2024 budget without approval of the state Assembly, and already implementing the 2025 budget without appropriation of the state Assembly.

“Governor Fubara has no where to go to. Even if he runs to Chukwu Abiama (God), He will not save him”, he said.

“If he (Fubara) disobeys the Supreme Court, we will do the necessary thing”, he said.

Asked what the necessary thing would be, he retorted: “Of course, impeachment process will begin.

He said Speaker Amaewhule is a man of procedure who will give Fubara time to do what is right, stressing,  if the governor fails to do what is right, they have no other option but to begin impeachment process against him.
