A 23-year-old woman, Aisat Usman, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a one-year-old child.

The defendant, of no fixed address, is facing a charge of stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp Olubu Apata, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 29 in the Odo-Ado area of Ado-Ekiti.

Apata alleged that the defendant stole the one-year-old child from his mother’s shop.

He said that the defendant was, however, apprehended by neighbours who raised the alarm and pursued her, leading to the rescue of the child.

According to him, the offence contravenes Section 292(1) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendant, who had no legal representation, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Taiwo Ajibade, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Ajibade subsequently adjourned the case until July 10 for hearing. (NAN)
