…Says sector has shown proof of resilience

Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission, has assured members of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) of the Commission’s commitment to ensuring sustainability for local manufacturers in the country.

Maida who made the remark Friday at a reception held in his honour by ATCON, noted that the challenges within the industry are being taken seriously and, ” myself and the minister of Communications and digital economy are working closely and looking at the right policies to ensure sustainability for an industry that has done so well.

The EVC said although Nigeria has close to 200 million connected lines, more than half are on 2G. “So, there is a lot of work to be done, especially in addressing challenges faced by MNOs (Mobile Network Operators) and OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) for long-term sustainability”.

“You have my assurances that as the regulator the NCC would always listen and do the right things. Please, continue in the spirit of conversation. Let’s see this as a partnership towards a better industry and continue inthe spirit of collaboration ”, he added.

He acknowledged that the sector has done well for the country with its 14 percent contributions to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product, (GDP).

The EVC thanked ATCON for the reception, “For me, it feels as though I have known you people for ages. I want to say a big thank you and that we have your best interest at heart”.

The highpoint of the event was the presentation of a portrait to the EVC.
