One Killed As Gunmen Attack Imo Court

February 3, 2023

One person has been killed in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State following an attack by gunmen on a court facility in the state.

Channels Television reports that the gunmen invaded the Ejemekwuru Customary Court in the area on Thursday and killed its Chairman, Nnaemeka Ugboma.

Although the State Police Command is yet to confirm the incident, it was gathered that the attackers stormed the area in motorcycles, while Mr. Ugboma was still in the court premises, and shot him dead.

The incident reportedly caused panic in the community, forcing lawyers, court staff as well as residents to flee for safety.

Although the customary court jurist is said to have hailed from the same Oguta Local Government Area, the motive of the attack and the identity of those behind it is yet to be ascertained.

The police spokesperson in the state, Henry Okoye, did not respond to calls from Channels Television and the command is yet to make any statement on the incident.

Imo has been experiencing a series of attacks by gunmen who unleash terror in the state and other South-Eastern states.

The gunmen often target security agencies, government officials, and facilities.

Just last week, some gunmen suspected to be members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), attacked the Agwa Vigilante Group in Agwa Community in the same council area of the state.

Three suspected members of the IPOB were killed by police operatives who foiled the attack.
